Kraków's winter road service runs from mid-October to mid-April. In the 2025/2026 season, up to 18 February 2026, the city used 18,100 tonnes of road salt, 2,600 m³ of brine, 10,900 tonnes of sand and 358 tonnes of calcium chloride. Crews work hardest when the temperature hovers around 0 °C and snow melts and refreezes.
Thaw days leave the most salty slush on the roads. Brine and calcium chloride keep the asphalt wet for a long time, so the car picks up the mixture on every drive, even when nothing is falling from the sky.
Intact clear coat handles salt well. Salt water conducts electricity and speeds up corrosion wherever metal is exposed: in a stone chip, or on a door edge scraped on a kerb. Rust starts under the chip, creeps under the paint and later shows up as bubbles.
Calcium chloride pulls moisture out of the air, so its film stays damp in the arches and on the sills for weeks. The sand spread with the salt chips the bonnet and bumper and scratches like sandpaper under a dry cloth.
Salt builds up most on:
A one-minute test: after a few dry days, run a finger along the bottom of the driver's door. A white, powdery trace is salt. On black plastic it shows as grey streaks, and on glass as smears the wipers cannot clear.
Without a garage, the usual option is a touchless self-service wash (myjnia bezdotykowa or myjnia samoobsługowa). The programme buttons are in Polish. Labels differ between operators, but these are the common ones:

Active foams can be strongly alkaline: wax is gone after a few such washes, while a good ceramic coating survives them.
Frost itself does not hurt paint. After a wash, water stays in the locks, the door and boot seals, the mirror mechanism and the gap around the fuel flap. Outside it freezes within minutes, and the next morning the door will not open.
At our studio we wash in a heated bay through the winter, including on days below zero. Before handing the car back we blow water out of the locks, seals, mirrors and gaps. There is no water left to freeze, so doors and locks do not stick after the wash.
If you wash it yourself:
Brush snow off the paint with a soft brush. A scraper or a stiff brush scratches, because sand sits under the snow. For ice on the windscreen and frozen locks, see frozen windscreen and locks.
A car parked on a busy street also gets sprayed with slush by passing traffic. If you leave Kraków for the Christmas break, wash the car before you go so the salt does not sit on the sills for weeks.

A sensible winter routine is a touchless wash every week or two and a hand wash every few weeks. In a hand wash the sand comes off during the pre-rinse, before a mitt touches the paint. That is how we wash every car: foam, rinse, then two buckets with grit guards.
A coated car still needs washing. Salt settles on it the same way but holds on less and rinses off faster.

Ceramic goes on clean, degreased paint and needs time to cure before it gets wet. October, before the first salt, is the easy moment. The coating is under a micron thick and will not stop a stone, so the bonnet and bumper of a car that does a lot of motorway miles get film. Yes. The dirt comes back, but each wash removes salt that would otherwise sit in the arches and on the sills for weeks. Every 1–2 weeks is enough for daily driving.
Yes. Afterwards, dry the door seals, open and close the doors and drive for a while. At our studio the car is washed in a heated bay and blown dry, so the locks do not freeze.
Yes, nothing touches the paint. Keep the lance away from locks and seals, skip the foam brush, and hand wash every few weeks to remove the road film.
Intact paint copes with it. Salt attacks chips and deep scratches down to the metal, where salt water speeds up rust that then spreads under the paint.
Many self-service washes have an underbody programme (mycie podwozia) or a lance for it. Use it after every thaw. Rust-proofing is done by anti-corrosion specialists.
Salt holds on less and rinses off faster, and the coating resists winter chemicals at pH 3–13. It does not stop stone chips; PPF film does.
